Shane has been meat-free since 2001. Although he converted to a vegetarian diet for health reasons, he has since sworn off animal by-products such as eggs and dairy as well. Living with five animals (a cat, three dogs, and his girlfriend, Kelly) has given him a different perspective in regards to animal sentience and rights, and a vegan lifestyle is congruent with his ethical beliefs.
Shane has a B.S. in computer programming and works as a programmer; his interest in computers, the Internet, and technology runs deep. He also enjoys skeptical research, debunking the paranormal, libertarian politics, sabermetrics, and baseball.

Kelly went veg her freshman year in college, when she literally gave up meat cold-turkey (coincidentally, turkey never was her favorite flavor of carcass). Years later, she finally kicked her ovo habit and made the jump to veganism. She’s been vegetarian since 1997, vegan, 2003(ish). Her dietary choices are due to a strong belief in the animal rights philosophy, and she is an ardent animal rights advocate and environmentalist.
Kelly has a B.A. in psychology and currently works in the tech field. She’s in also a published author; her first book, 13 Lucky Steps to Writing a Research Paper, is available at Amazon.com or through Peedee Publishing. Her interests include animal rights, animal behavior, anthrozoology, feminist issues, environmental ethics, childfree living, religion and church/state separation, and atheism. In her spare time, she enjoys playing with her furbabies, watching good TV and movies (anything snarky and/or starring ass-kicking heroines will do!), reading voraciously, free-thinking, and exercising. Oh, and blogging, of course!
You can visit Kelly at www.kellygarbato.com and read her random rants on her blog, www.kellygarbato.com/blog. She’s also reviewed a number of exercise/fitness items on Amazon.com.
Kelly and Shane have been together since 2000. They currently live in Overland Park, Kansas, having relocated from Rochester, New York. They share their home with one cat, Ozzy, and three dogs, Ralphie, Peedee, and O-Ren Ishii. Kelly works full-time (Shane, part-time) on their business, Hot Dog!, LLC.
Hell Food - Because food can be hell!
Hell Food is a blog dedicated to food; more specifically, food that can be hell, not just on our personal health, but also the well-being of the planet and the welfare of the billions of animals slaughtered annually to whet our collective appetite for meat and animal by-products. While not an animal rights blog per se, Hell Food does have an animal-friendly bent, as both its authors are vegans and supporters of animal rights.
Hell Food covers a wide range of culinary topics, including but not limited to the following: food production, including its impact on the environment; the pros and cons of different diets, particularly vegetarian, vegan, and meat-based diets, as well as low-fat and low-calorie diets; ingredient, product, and restaurant reviews and comparisons; recipes; and, of course, food-related news and humor.
Shane started Hell Food in December 2005, after receiving some unexpected inspiration from the Morgan Spurlock documentary Super Size Me. He quickly convinced the blog-addicted Kelly to join him. In his writing, Shane primarily focuses on the health aspects of food, while Kelly examines the impact of one’s diet on the environment and non-human animals.
